The Post Graduate & Research Department of Arabic at Farook College boasts a rich tradition spanning several decades in providing education in the Arabic language & literature. Its inception in the college dates back to the year 1949 when it commenced offering the BOL (Bachelor of Oriental Language) degree in Arabic. Prof. V. Muhammed, the frst teacher appointed on 8 August 1948, is associated with this esteemed department.
After ten years in 1959, the BA Arabic programme in the single main pattern was initiated. Subsequently, it underwent a transformation and became the BA Arabic & Islamic History programme (Double Major with a duration of six semesters/eligibility: A pass eligible for higher studies in the HSE or any other equivalent examination) in 1966. The MA in Arabic language & literature (Duration: Four semesters/eligibility: BA/BSc/BCom) was established in 1967.
In the year 2000, the department achieved the status of a Research Department, marking a pioneering move among the affiliated colleges under the University of Calicut in Arabic language & literature. The PG & Research Department of Arabic introduced a Peer-Reviewed International Annual Arabic Research Journal titled ‘Majallath Al Sabah Lil Buhooth’ (ISSN: 2454-7824) in 2016.
Currently, the Department of Arabic has student strength of around 180 in the UG programme, 40 in the PG Programme, and approximately 30 in the Ph. D programme. To date, 51 scholars have obtained their Ph.D from the University of Calicut under the PG & Research Department of Arabic at Farook College.
In addition to organizing various conferences, symposiums, seminars, lecture series, and workshops, the PG & Research Department of Arabic has successfully completed two UGC-sponsored Major Research Projects under CPE (College with Potential for Excellence). The job market for bilingual Arabic speakers is rapidly growing, presenting more job opportunities than there are qualified candidates. The PG& Research Department of Arabic at Farook College is recognized as the premier education hub in the state, providing a substantial array of academic performances, research activities, seminars, workshops, conferences and lecture series focused on research and literary trends.
