Physics Congress 2023: Inspiring Tomorrow's Scientists at Farook College

The Department of Physics, Farook College (Autonomous), in collaboration with the Association of Physics Teachers (APT-Plus two level), Kozhikode district committee, conducted a two-day residential programme for plus two students, “Physics Congress,” at Farook College on November 11–12, 2023. The selection for the programme was through a talent search examination conducted by APT. The programme was inaugurated by Shri Santhosh Kumar M., the regional deputy director, Kozhikode. He appreciated the efforts of teachers for the promotion of basic science research. The principal, Dr. Aysha Swapna presided over the function.
Hod Midhun Shah gave felicitations. Dr. C. D Ravikumar, Professor of Physics at Calicut University, handled the first session on “Extra Solar Planets and the Search for Life in the Universe." Former head of the department of physics at SN College, Chellanur, Dr. Sethumadhvan, presented the topic “A Journey Through Newtonian Mechanics."
In the afternoon session, the topic “Quantum Computing: An Introduction to Next-Generation Computing" was introduced by Dr. R. K Sunil Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of IT, Kannur University. The Scientific Assistant from Bhaba Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai Mr. Shareef P. K. shared his experience at BARC with students. Ms. Amal Abdurahman, a research scholar in the Department of Physics, briefed her on her journey to a research career.
In the evening, students got an opportunity to watch the sky with the telescope at Farook College. Students watched Jupiter and Saturn very clearly through the telescope with the help of teachers Mr. Naseef Mohammed and Anas Swalih P. K., after that, Prof. K. Pappooty, former Hod, Dept. of Physics, Govt College Madappally, conducted a session on astronomy and astrophysics.
The second day of the programme started with a lab visit to the department of physics at Farook College. Students were able to see many experimental setups, including research facilities. The teachers, Muhamed Jubeer E, Bassam S. A., Midhun Shah, etc., managed the sessions. Prof. V. P N Namboori from the Cochin University of Science and Technology handled some physics stage demonstrations regarding the basic physics principles; after that, he presented the topic “Photonics and its Application” in detail. Dr.Musfir P.N. assisted the resources person in the demonstration session.
At the same time, the plus teachers who assembled here got an opportunity to interact with Dr. Sethumadhavan. Dr. Anoop K. K., Assistant Professor from the Department of Physics at CUSAT and also a collaborator of ISRO, did the session on Chandrayyan-3. He detailed the session, and at the end, he outlined the career options in physics after the Plus 2 programme.
The valedictory session began with Prof. Shahin Thayyil from Calicut University, who briefed some software tools to the students. In all the sessions, students got an opportunity to interact with the resource persons. Around 98 students from different schools in Kozhikode participated in the programme. Their accommodation and refreshment were arranged at farook higher secondary school, farook college. The APT core members were present during the whole program. The students shared their feedback about the programme at the end. All students received their certificates and gifts during the session.
