The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) initiative at Farook College is dedicated to exploring, preserving, and integrating India's rich intellectual traditions with modern education and research. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and contemporary knowledge by fostering research, organizing cultural events, and promoting interdisciplinary learning.
Through seminars, workshops, research projects, and exhibitions, IKS at Farook College provides a platform for students and faculty to engage with India’s heritage in meaningful ways.
Objectives
- Conduct research on Indian Knowledge Systems and their relevance in modern disciplines.
- Integrate ancient knowledge traditions with contemporary education.
- Organize workshops, seminars, and exhibitions to showcase India’s heritage.
- Engage students and faculty in preserving and promoting traditional knowledge.
Key Activities (2022-23)
IKS at Farook College has actively engaged in various academic, cultural, and historical activities to deepen understanding and appreciation of Indian traditions.
Archaeological Excavation
An archaeological excavation was conducted at Tipu Fort in collaboration with Pazhassi Raja Museum, Kozhikode. Three faculty members from the History Department and 17 students participated in the excavation. Certificates were awarded to faculty and students for their contributions, and the project was recognized in a newspaper report for its significance in archaeological research.
Folklore Events & Folk Fest
The Malayalam Department, in association with the Kerala Folklore Academy, organized a three-day Folk Fest from January 11 to 13, 2022. The event included a national seminar on "Folklore: Contemporary Reading," a folk exhibition showcasing indigenous traditions, a traditional theater performance of Chavittu Nadakam, a folk song competition, and cultural performances featuring early film songs and dances. The festival was inaugurated by Dr. Jisha C.K., Head of the Department of Folklore Studies at the University of Calicut.
Freedom Wall at Farook College
As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, celebrating India’s 75th year of independence, a Freedom Wall was created at Farook College. Designed by 13 students from ‘Strokes’ – The Artists' Club, the mural depicted significant themes such as the Dandi March, Wagon Tragedy, and various national and regional freedom struggles.
Freedom Wall at Bliss Park
Another mural was created at Bliss Park to reflect historical movements and struggles. This public awareness initiative was designed to educate visitors about India’s journey to independence.
Rangoli Competition
A vibrant art competition was held to promote Indian traditional art forms. The event encouraged creativity and cultural appreciation among students.
Ethnobotany Research Projects
Research projects focused on documenting indigenous knowledge of medicinal plants. These studies explored the relationship between plants and traditional healing practices, aiming to preserve India’s botanical heritage and its applications in modern medicine.
National Seminar
A national seminar provided a platform for scholars and researchers to discuss the relevance of Indian Knowledge Systems in today’s world. Experts from various disciplines examined the scientific, philosophical, and cultural contributions of India’s past.
